Types of Homes
Low Rent Apartments for Seniors
Low
Rent Apartments base the cost of rent on the income level of the tenant
making them affordable for a wider range of seniors. Rent is typically
based on 30-35% of income level and includes heat, water, trash pick-up
and snow removal. The tenant is responsible for phone, electricity and
cable. No care is provided in apartments and the tenant is responsible
for their own care including meals, transportation and laundry.
Retirement Centers
Retirement
Centers provide independent living with many added amenities and
activities. Home size ranges from a studio apartment to one with 2-3
bedrooms. All include private bath, living room and kitchen or
kitchenette. Utilities, meals and housekeeping may or may not be
included depending on the specific home. Activities and social events
both at the home and in the community including transportation for
planned excursions are included. Staff is on-site for emergencies, but
does not provide individual care with tasks of daily living.
Assisted Living Homes / Adult Foster Care
Assisted
Living Homes cover a wide range of situations from independent living
to hospice care. Meals, laundry, housekeeping, medication
dispension/monitoring, utilities, bathing, dressing, special diets and
activities are included in the rent. They may also offer transportation
to appointments and outside activities or offer these services at an
additional cost. Some Assisted Living Centers are staffed 24-hours a
day. Others are staffed by workers who live in the homes and are not
always awake. Rooms are private or semi-private and may have a private
bath. Size of rooms range from semi private or private room to a full size apartment with bedroom, kitchen (or kitchenette), living room and full bath. Assisted living and adult foster care homes meet the needs of individuals who are high functioning but lonely, need someone to cook and monitor their diet, someone to clean for them, frail and/or weak, short term memory loss to late stage Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, MS, Lewy Body dementia all the way to end of life.
Rent includes: meals, utilities, laundry, housekeeping, medication ordering and/or dispensing, bathing, dressing, incontinence care, and activities. All homes will be equipped for cable TV and phones in the rooms. Rents have a very wide range due to the size of the room or apartment and the amount of care needed. Most of these homes do not accept Medicaid. Medicaid is somewhat complicated to explain when applied to these homes vs. nursing homes. Please contact the Alliance for Senior Housing for further explanation.
Nursing Homes
Nursing Homes are for those needing more medical attention or possibly are a wander risk. These homes provide 24 hour care with nurses, PA’s, physical therapists, and doctors. You may be in a nursing home for a short stay for re-hab and return home or go to an assisted living home. If you’re there for re-hab purposes only, most likely you will have a private room. If your stay is longer you’ll (usually) then be moved to a semi private room. Nursing homes now offer a wide range of activities and outings and have improved dramatically from long ago. Cable TV and private phones are extra but available. Rent includes: meals, housekeeping, bathing, dressing, feeding, incontinence care, physical needs, and transportation. Rent may fall under Medicaid guidelines or pay privately. Medicaid is somewhat complicated to explain when applied to nursing homes vs. assisted living/adult foster care homes. Please contact the Alliance for Senior Housing for further explanation.
Adult Day Care & Respite Services
Adult Day Care and Respite Services are for the caregiver who needs a time of rest or relaxation. This service could also be used for the caregiver who is still working or will be out of town. This could be done in your own home by providing a service to come in, however, it generally is done outside of your home. It could be an every day service that’s needed, a few hours a week, a weekend, or even a month. Daily rates are usually applied.
